In 1975, James Sr. ran for City Council and Chuck Stone wrote a complimentary article lauding Jim's dedication to public service and ideology of placing the people first. He referred to Jim as a "straight-forward clear thinker" who has kept countless homes from being repossessed and has represented numerous people for little or no fee. Chuck Stone analogized Jim to a "great Italian philosopher who made the Renaissance a wonder of western civilization," and noted that people from both sides of the mayoral race worked for Jim in his campaign, which is a measure of his strength and essential honesty.
